The Rockland Central School District Board of Education is moving forward to fill the position left vacant by the resignation of member James Buck on July 3.

The board has decided to appoint the position, rather than have an election that would have delayed filling the position until the end of August or the start of September.

The board will invite the top four unelected vote getters in the February Board of Education election—Tom Ward, Jill Smith, Justin Murphy and Dan Johnston—to interview for the position and will fill the position based on those interviews. If none of those interviewed are interested or are unable to serve, the board will continue down the list of former candidates.

Whoever is appointed will serve until June 30, and if the person wishes to remain on the board, he or she will need to run for election in May.

The board’s goal is to have the position filled in time for the next meeting on Aug. 5.
