Dear LMCS Families,

During the months of April and May the grade 3-8 state assessments in ELA and Math take place. Federal law requires that New York schools administer a test each year to measure student outcomes. Students in grades 3-8 will participate in the computer-based testing platform for the New York State ELA and Math Assessments.

The grades 3-8 assessments in ELA and Math will be administered in two sessions. Like the assessments last year, this year's assessments will be untimed.  As long as students are working productively, they will have as much time as they need to complete each test session, within the confines of the regular school day.

Please make a note and mark your calendars of the administration of the New York State ELA and Math Assessments for grades 7-8  according to the schedule below:

NYS ELA Test Dates:

ELA Grade 7:  April 19-20

ELA Grade 8: April 21 and 24

NYS Math Test Dates:

Math Grade 7:  May 2-3

Math Grade 8:  May 4-5

We would like to explain how we use the results to improve education for your child as well as changes meant to improve testing conditions.

The most important thing we want parents to know is that state assessments provide us with important data that we use to improve education for all students. We view these tests as a measure of our performance, not your child’s. For example, if we find a grade is struggling with a math concept, we may enhance instruction in that area with new resources or adjust how we teach the concept.

If you have any questions at all, please contact me. We want to ensure you have all the answers you need on this important issue.

Educationally Yours,

Adam Larson
